3 phase motor tripping with soft starter
Tags: Troubleshooting
In starting up the motor, it will trip from 4 to 6 times. everybody believe it should be related to viscosity of the product. But, i believe, it's down to electrical problem. Some has suggested that electrical heat tracing is the solution. Motor specification is 415V, Full load current 389A, and maximum current is 2800 A. Maybe it's down to electrical cable fault.
It used for Bunkering Pump. Suction and Discharge of fuel oil. We used soft starter for method of starting, and at 1st, we've setting overcurrent setting from 3.0,3.2 until 4.0, but then, it's still tripping.
We need to check many things:
Generally if the motor trips during starting means there may be faulty setting of relays or very high voltage drop or starting time may be high or temperature rise is high
make sure that the driven equipment is fulfilling its specifications
for e.g if it is driving a dryer in an asphalt plant check the support rollers or bearings may me its not running smoothly and causing overcurrent and at last causing tripping of motor.

- check connections
- cable
- continuity check of cable
- rating of circuit breaker
- check load current with clamp meter see if there is increase in load current.
- where is this motor used
- i mean is it driving something
- what is the function of the motor.
- where it is used plant or somewhere else
- Motor capacity
- Method of starting
- motor characteristics like full load current, starting current, starting duration, number of starts, locked rotor current.
- What relays provided for the motor protection
- What are the setting
- What is the distance of the drive from the main panel?
- What cable is installed (size and material)
